Team Apex Trackdays riders Kory Cowan and Michael Bunds took a hard-earned win in the 1½ hour endurance race at the season-opener for the Plaza Cycle Masters of the Mountains race series at Miller Motorsports Park. The victory was especially meaningful to them after a number of near misses and misfortunes in last season’s Master’s of the Mountains endurance championship. However, a winter of planning and hard work paid dividends. The event drew a grid of 18 teams that included top local riders such as Jason Parkinson, Danny Norr and Apex’s own John Carver and Clint Warner teamed together. But a few laps into the race Kory checked out on the competition and when he came in to pit at the half-way point he handed Bunds a nearly 30 second lead. The team’s carefully planned pit strategy saw them back on the track quicker than any other team and a solid ride by Bunds extended the lead to nearly 1 minute by the time the checkered flag flew.
Bunds and Cowan rode an ’05 R6 that has benefited from work by Matt Spencer at Salt Lake Motorsports and Jason Eldredge of Corporate Suspension, as well as DOT Michelins from Fastline Racetire. The bike and tires performed flawlessly, with the tires losing none of their fantastic grip and looking ready for many more hard laps. Bunds and Cowan would particularly like to thank Jason of Corporate Suspension for being an invaluable part of the team!
Apex racers took 3 of the top 4 positions with Clint Warner and John
Carver taking 2nd overall. Travis Child and Skylar Neilson took 2nd in
their Class and 4th overall.
